Explore Styria with the IWA: Hike near Wildon
The beautiful historic city of Wildon is located south of Graz at the confluence of the Mur and Kainach Rivers. The IWA invites you to join us on a hike led by member Christine R. to explore the area near Wildon, the Wildoner Schlossberg (castle ruins) and the Buchkogel. The route features beautiful views, and we will end the tour with a visit to a Buschenschank (local restaurant offering regional, seasonal food and drink).

Meeting time: take the S1 at 12:35 from Graz Hauptbahnhof (towards Leibnitz or Spielfeld-Strass) or board at Graz Don Bosco or Graz Puntigam stops a few minutes later

What to bring: Put on non-slippery shoes and take along a bottle of water as well as warmer clothes to spend time outside in the evening. Depending on the weather forecast, it may be worthwhile to bring a rain jacket.
Difficulty: This hike is easy, and young kids should be able to do it without any problem. The hike is note accessible for strollers/buggies. No one will be allowed to climb the ruins, since this is quite dangerous and stones could break off.
Routes and approximate hiking times: We will hike from the Wildon train station up to the Wildoner Schlossberg and explore the ruins of several medieval castles there. We will also have the opportunity to enter a cave called the “Wilde Mann Höhle”.
This first loop will take 60-90 minutes and those of us who are tired at this point or whose kids would rather spend time on a small playground can head directly to Buschenschank Bockmoar, which is another 20 minutes’ walk away. Those who still have energy and fancy hiking a little more will walk up to the top of the Wildoner Buchkogel, enjoy the forest and the views and then head back down to Buschenschank Bockmoar from there.
We plan to all meet at Buschenschank at 16:00 at a table that will be set up for us in the middle of the vineyards.
