SUMMARY:April General Meeting: Mangroves of the Solomon Islands
DESCRIPTION:In April\, the IWA invites you to travel to the South Pacific with us and enter a world of mysterious mangrove forests and feminine power over the resources within them. \nWe have asked Heide K. Bruckner (University of Graz) to share the food\, climate\, and feminist dimensions of her work in the Solomon Islands.  \nMangrove forests are found in tropical swamp regions where the land and sea meet\, areas home to some of the most biologically complex ecosystems on Earth. Because these plants can efficiently absorb and store carbon from the atmosphere\, they have gained fame as “climate superheroes”. But mangroves have different meanings for local communities that depend on them for food and firewood. These forests are highly gendered spaces\, key to indigenous food sovereignty and cultural identity. They are also threatened by logging and resource exploitation. \nBased on her pioneering research in the Solomon Islands\, South Pacific\, Dr. Bruckner shows that more locally based and inclusive feminist approaches to mangroves (and their management) are needed to meet entangled food and climate justice goals. DESCRIPTION:IWA “Get Fit in Graz” forest meditation walk in the Leechwald \nIn 2024\, the IWA entered a collaboration with the Verein Jukus to participate the ‘Pro Aktiv’ project\, which promotes movement in everyday life and creates awareness of the connection between exercise\, health\, and well-being. Our members’ interest in Pro Aktiv inspired us to create our ‘Get Fit in Graz’ group\, where we motivate one another to do more sports and movement activities. \nWe invite you to join us on this special Pro Aktiv / IWA walk in the Leechwald forest on May 13. \nWe will meet at the Tram 1 end stop (Mariatrost) at 9:45 a.m. and walk up to the Mariatrost Basilica\, then continue along the Roseggerweg through the Leechwald forest to the Hilmteich pond. In between\, we will take time for breathing and stretching exercises. \nLisa G. and Alena S. from the Jukus Verein will lead this walk and talk about the project.  \nNote about the location: \nAt the Hilmteich\, you can either take Tram 1 or Bus 58 back into the city. The Purberg Café is also right by the Hilmteich\, and members can enjoy a drink after the walk or have a picnic in the meadow. Partners\, guests\, and children are welcome on this walk. The walk (length: 3.7 km\, mostly flat terrain\, approx. 1.5 hours) is generally suitable for young children and prams. DESCRIPTION:In May\, the IWA has invited Aylin Ugur Akyolová to speak to our members on the topic of “the benefits of hormonal yoga”.  \nAylin has taught yoga for about 10 years. She completed an accredited Hatha yoga teacher training at Power Yoga Academy and later specialized in Yoga and Yoga Therapy through a three-year program at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport\, Charles University\, Prague.  \nShe is also a certified instructor of Hormonal Yoga for Women by Dinah Rodrigues\, including the special variation for diabetics. DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled in light of the tragic events that occurred in Graz on June 10. \nIn 2025 the IWA is collaborating with the Jukus Verein in their Pro Aktiv project and organizing monthly events that encourage members to get out\, meet\, and move! \nThis month\, activity coordinator Monika K. invites you to join her on a fun bicycling trip along the Mur River (Murradweg) that starts at the Graz City Beach (Stadtstrand) and ends in small\, beautiful nearby town of Fernitz. The route is approximately 11.5 km long (generally requiring 40-50 minutes at a steady pace) and mostly flat. Partners and family members are warmly invited to join this activity. The café-bar\, which is popular with both Graz residents and visitors\, is housed in the Reinerhof\, the oldest documented house in Graz and one of the city’s most important cultural assets\, on the Schloßbergplatz. \nTo help Corinna reserve enough spaces\, please sign up by June 5. \nA fun fact for our history buffs: As you enter the bar\, don’t miss the medieval fountain found during renovation work and integrated into the bar area. You can also view a reproduction of a “deed of donation” (Schenkungsurkunde) from 1164 in the bar. At the time\, there was a close relationship between the Margrave Ottokar III of Styria and the Stift Rein monastery. The Margrave made several gifts of land to Stift Rein\, including three farmsteads located at the time below the castle on the Schloßberg in 1164. The decorations and floral bouquets at Lederleitner are unique and special\, so you can also enjoy browsing…maybe you will find a special gift for someone or yourself! \nHow to get there: \nBy public transportation: from Jakominiplatz take tram 1 to Mariatrost and get out at the stop “Hilmteich”. The Hilmteichschlössel is across the street and to the left. You can enter the\ncafé from the street or the path at the pond. By car: park in the green zone in Hilmteichstrasse or the Schubertstrasse. \nBy bike: From the Glacisstraße\, turn into the Zinsendorfgasse and ride to the roundabout at the university (Sonnenfelsplatz). Take the 3rd exit to enter Schubertstrasse. At the end of the Schubertstrasse (where it joins the Hilmteichstrasse)\, you will see the Hilmteichschlössel on the right. Park to the right of the building near the Hilmteich (pond).
