SUMMARY:2024 IWA National Holiday Hike
DESCRIPTION:October 26th is the day Austria celebrates its neutrality – or the signing of the neutrality pact after the occupation of Austria ended in 1955. It is an Austrian tradition to take a hike on this holiday. \nMember Margit K. will lead our group on a sporty hike through the Semmering area. \nMeeting date and time: Saturday\, 26 October 2024\, promptly at 10:00 a.m.\nMeeting point: Parking lot at the Semmering Bahnhof\, Google map link \nDuration: 3.5 hours\, lowest elevation: 860 m\, highest elevation: 1260 m \nSign up by October 15 \nWe will stroll through peaceful pine forests\, surrounded by light-colored limestone rock and beautiful colored leaves in between. On our way\, we will encounter many viewpoints allowing a peek at the aqueducts\, tracks and tunnels of the old Semmeringbahn\, the first normal-track mountain train route in Europe. This route is part of the UNESCO cultural heritage sites and has been operating since 1856. \nWe will also pass by old villas and luxury hotels\, some of them lost places\, abandoned today\, but still bearing witness to a once-prosperous time and the high society mountain retreat of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These relicts of old times in the middle of mountainous scenery combine the grandeur of the past with the tranquility of the presence and the promise of serene revival in the future. \nRead more about the area \nPlease consider carpooling with other people! \nYoung\, sporty children with hiking experience or children over 6 years can manage the hike with help\, but the hike is not accessible for strollers/buggies.

DESCRIPTION:As part of a “get fit in 2025” initiative the IWA is cordially invited to take part in this “parkrun” taking place in Stadtpark. \n\nSarah K. will be there and you will probably see a few familiar IWA faces.\nBring your husbands\, partners\, kids and dogs to walk\, jog or run a 5 km stretch around Stadtpark. If you are unsure about your ability you can just do one or two rounds (i.e. 1\,5 or 3 km) and then chat with the organizational team as the others finish. This is not a race – or a particularly sporty group.\n\nparkrun is free\, and just know that you will never be last – we have a dedicated person bringing up the rear!\n\n\nparkrun always starts at 9.00 sharp (every Saturday)\, briefing and welcome is at about 8:45.\n\n\nAfterwards we go for coffee at Café Turners on Karmeliterplatz.\n\n\n\nMeeting place is the former “traffic garden” next to the children’s play area. DESCRIPTION:ZAM Steiermark is an organization that works together with AMS (the Austrian Unemployment Service) in Graz to provide special support for women\, helping them receive education\, training\, and guidance so they can (re-)enter the workforce here. \nThe IWA will be given a special tour of the new ZAM premises\, located on the corner of the Kaiserfeldgasse/Neutorgasse\, by experienced staff. Vice President Sara Crockett will speak about the positive experiences she made in summer when taking part in the ZAM program. \nAfterwards\, those interested can go to eat together at a nearby restaurant. \nPlease sign up for this event by February 7th.
